Probably the slowest vehicle I have travelled in. Climbing dangerously winding roads over mountain passes that aren't recommended for RV over 25ft (ours is 36ft...) wasn't the brightest of moments, but an adventure non the less. Old betsy is over 20yrs old... I thought she was gonna give way, but I'm surprised every time she makes another corner!
Day 1- Arrived and exhausted front the 13 hour flight, not much sleep, running on little energy to keep ourselves awake the next 10 hrs to adapt to USA times. Straight into Big Rig Betsy, going 50m/hr on a 70m/hr zone (fml). I literally watched the time double to our destination every 2 minutes on the tomtom.
We stopped for food, WHOLEFOODS!!!!! Foodies like us, we live for that place! After the happiness of getting good food, we were then slapped in the face with the RV broken down. It was 42degrees celsius in the middle of fresno, California. Luckily we found out the fuel gage was in correct and we were just on empty! All I could look forward to was food and the lodge we were meant to get to tonight... in Yosemite, but of course we didn't.
All loosing our tempers and the light, we stopped about 2 hrs from our destination in a little town called Mariposa (top right photo). I folded down the table to make my bed in the RV, and slept like a rock.
Day 2 - Monique and I made ourselves a promise to do workouts each day... her sprinting talents leaves me in the dust, but is the best interval works outs you can do with using your surroundings. We were on our way within the hour, slowly again...trying to accept the snail pace). Still pretty tired, and looking forward to the comfy bed and fresh non moving, clean shower at the lodge. We stopped and moved so slowly, a 2hr journey turned to 5hrs. Made it by 12 to the lodge...to yet again be slapped in the face with mum cancelling it cos it had no amenities to cook which meant we had to drive another 45 to another campground we passed...I lost my sh*t! Had a little cry, so sick of sitting in the RV, is was fu*#ing horrible, you can only take it so long.
Note to self, yelling and getting angry doesn't help anything or anyone
We found the camp ground and at least found a creek to wash away the anger I had boiled up over the last 48hrs in the RV. Quickly found a hike in Hetch Hetchy (photo above), finishing the walk at 830pm, bed it was next.
Day 3 - IT WAS EPIC, I can only explain through visual pictures because, words dont do it justice! We hiked a 5-6hrs journey in under 4hrs. Steep steeps, getting saturated on the mist trail, literally feels like its raining but the water is so powerful and cold that you get mist from the falls and freeze your ass off. Either way, my but will be perky after the thousand steeps we climbed up the cliff face next to Nevada Water falls. To Many good routes and such little time!
We are now in boise, had a few days chilling and running around doing wedding chores, eating, sun baking and relaxing a bit more. We challenged our selves with some hectic passes in mountain in old Betsy, but we made it in double the amount of time we thought we would... I have accepted how slow she is now and realised we have to add on about 1/3 of the time to each journey in the RV. I guess slow and steady wins the race. Onto Ketchum for all the wedding event and activities!
Happy adventures and happy surfing! Because I sure do need a surf when I get home.
Well hello and welcome to my blog. I'm currently travelling the globe, surfing, eating, cooking and learning whilst juggling the study of a B.Sc in Nutritional Medicine.
